The first step of preparing a piece of fei cui jade for polymer impregnation is to boil it in acid to remove any mineral impurities from the tiny fissures between the individual crystal grains that make up the jade rock. These fissures are then filled with a polymer. Thus the treatment removes brown discoloration and greatly improves the translucency. However the telltale micro-fissures from the bleaching process can still be seen by examining the surface with overhead light, as shown here. Polymer-impregnated jade is termed “B-jade” in the trade. Untreated jade is known as “A-jade,” while dyed jade is “C-jade.” If a dyed polymer is used, it is termed “B+C jade.”

Burmese Fei Cui jade may contain mineral inclusions, fractures, veins, grain boundaries, color concentrations and other internal features related to its mineralogical composition, formation and subsequent geological history. Such features can provide useful information for gemological identification and the study of Fei Cui jade from Myanmar.
Burmese Fei Cui Jade Inclusion Photomicrographs
The Hyperion Burmese Fei Cui jade gallery includes microscopic features documented in natural Fei Cui jade from Myanmar (Burma). Each entry is accompanied by descriptive information and, where available, references to the gemological literature.
What Inclusions Can Reveal About Burmese Fei Cui Jade
Microscopic examination is an important part of the gemological study of Fei Cui jade. Mineral inclusions, textures, fractures and other internal features can provide information about mineral composition, geological formation and subsequent alteration, and may also assist in recognizing treatment.
Hyperion combines inclusion photomicrography with supporting gemological information so that individual features can be compared with documented examples of Burmese Fei Cui jade.
